Not only because the developers said that this remake would do away with the shitty mapping that defines the original game today, and also because I would get the Apogee Throwback Pack. I did a thing I only usually do for cheap games, and I pre-ordered Rise of the Triad. It did it because it played like nothing else out there. It did that with only four guns and a handful of tilesets to dress up the very square-and-rectangle based rooms. Wolf 3D was a product of its time, and got the audience it had because it used its first person shooter leanings to make the game more viscerally comprehensible and satisfying.

So many games like Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Unreal, Call of Duty, Team Fortress, even the Elder Scrolls series all have not only advanced the genre technologically, but also in terms of gameplay, movement, direction, ambitions, and possibilities.
